The choices are kale, kale, and kale.  Let’s cook kale.

There is green kale, purple kale, blue kale, and dinosaur kale.

We love it all.  Good thing, too, because there’s a lot of it.

HAPPY GARDENING!!!

Can you believe the color on this cabbage?  I planted 5 of them in the garden, and they are simply gorgeous right now.  They aren’t making little cabbage heads yet, but the leaves sure are pretty.  Could be our lack of rain.

Doesn’t matter;  I love seeing them in the garden.

I was hoping to use these broccoli florets in a casserole, but they are a little too opened up for that.  Maybe I will just put them in a vase.  I love them both ways.

Hi, everybody.  I’m Gizmo, and I would like you to know that today is our third anniversary.

Gerry and Jon rescued me three years ago at the Valley River Humane Society.  I was only there for eight days, so I never made any real friends.  But when I met these two humans, I knew that they were just right for me.

When they first brought me home, I was 2 years old, and only weighed 6 pounds, but they started feeding me lots of good food, and I grew into the handsome 12 pound kitty that I am today.

We also have a great home here in the mountains.  We live on a very quiet street, with no traffic, so I can be free to sit in the road if it strikes my fancy.  I also have lots of nice woods to patrol every day.  I catch mice and moles, and bugs and stuff.  It is great!!!  I have been so happy here with my new family.

Well, thanks for hearing my story, and wishing us happy anniversary.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY GIZMO!!!

This is one of several Salad Burnet plants that I planted back in February.  I sowed the seeds along with my kale, cabbage,  and lettuce seeds.  And they all went out into the garden in March.

Salad Burnet isn’t one of those greens you can buy in the grocery store.  You have to grow it yourself.  But it is easy to grow from seeds;  you can even grow it in a pot on your patio.

And it is delicious.  It tastes (and smells) a little like cucumbers.  I love brushing against it in the garden.

As you can see, they still look great!  Guess they don’t mind the cold either.

I thought you might get a tickle out of last year’s kale.  The tall green and the purple ones are plants that survived last winter.  They already made seeds, and those are the seeds I am using for my microgreens.

The short plants in this picture are this year’s kale.  I will take out the tall ones when winter comes, and leave the others to overwinter.  We can still harvest the leaves and eat them.   SO GOOD!!!

This is the kale that I planted this spring.  I sowed the seeds in a flat in February, and got them going in the basement.  Then in March we planted them in the garden.  And they have been growing great all summer.  We’ve eaten LOTS of kale.

Kale is a biennial, meaning that it makes seeds in the second year.  So they have to survive the winter in order to make seeds.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this winter is milder than last.  Last year only three of our kales made it.

The Bradford Pear Trees are starting to change color.  Not all of them are this colorful, but they are beautiful.

There are lots of them in the neighborhood and around town.

I hope you enjoy seeing them as much as I do.

Before that last cold spell I went out and cut all my Baker fern leaves.  I brought them inside and put them in a pretty vase on the landing.  They were fine all by themselves, but then I remembered I had a few extra silk sunflowers with long stems.  So I added them to the vase.  They have been there for almost three weeks, and show no sign of fading.

Now they greet me every time I go up and down the stairs.

I know that complaining about the weather does NO good, but I am going to do it anyway.  We haven’t had any rain since the middle of September.  It is DRY!!!

So you can imagine how excited we were on Saturday to get this little bit of moisture in the air.  It registered only .25 inch on the weather station, but we celebrated anyway.

HAPPY GARDENING!!!
