Rock Delivery

I was out in the garden yesterday, and heard a big truck coming up the road.  Then I heard a terrible crashing noise, and hurried down to see what all the racket was about.  It was the truck dumping a load of rip rap rocks to go in the washed out ditches.  Yay!!!
 
Thanks to all the folks who work hard to keep our neighborhood in good shape.

Another Special Birthday

Today is Jon's 77th birthday.  And just last week he was on the roof painting the top section.  Here are his thoughts:  I don't mind going up there, but I put on two coats, because this is the last time I will be doing it.  
 
I'm not sure I would even be able to walk on the roof, but he does it like there's nothing to it.  Gotta admire that.

We love our Alstroemerias.  I think these green ones are my favorite.  They are so fresh and cheery.

Poppies for Memorial Day

Poppy Flower Memorial Day Symbolism
 
In addition to eternal sleep, the poppy has signified remembrance and hope through history. Today, poppies carry a message of peace with an underlying sentiment of soldier's sacrifice as they tend to grow on war-torn fields. Following the Napoleonic Wars in the early 19th century and again after WWI, red poppy flowers began popping up around. They were often the first type of vegetation to regrow on the destroyed battlefields, which were rich in lime deposits, due to the rubble. This provided optimal soil for their growth. War veteran John McCrae's famous poem, "In Flanders Field," mentions the poppies.

I got to spend my birthday with my sisiter, Linda.  She is the "big" sister, but as you can see:  I am definitely bigger.  Linda reads this blog every day, and often comments.  She is my number one fan, and I am happy for you to meet her.  She is a kindred spirit, a role model, and a gardening buddy.

Today is my birthday, and for a special present I am in Virginia with my three sisters.

Repainting the Pallet Flag

Last week we repainted the pallet flag, and when we got ready to move it back to its spot, I noticed a curious skink hanging out.  I guess he liked the job we did, because he stayed on it the whole time we were carrying it back.
 
We like it too.

Look how our clever neighbors transformed the Christmas camper into an Irish camper.  They decorated it for Valentines Day too, but I forgot to take a picture of it then.  Sorry.  
 
The haybale always makes us happy as we drive into the neighborhood.  I hope it makes you smile too.

Winter is Back

I thought you'd like to see what's happening here.
 
We had a couple inches of snow on Wednesday, but it all melted by lunchtime.  And I was very surprised when I woke up on Thursday to more snow!!!  The temperature was 15 degrees, with a wind chill of 2!!!!  I did NOT go out to take a picture at that time.  I waited a while, and got this picture of more snow coming down.  
 
It wasn't enough to get out the sled or build a snowman, but both Wednesday and Thursday were beautiful days in the mountains.
